Indonesian musician and record producer Nicole Zefanya, known professionally as NIKI has released a new single “Before (Spotify Singles).”
The new song is one of the two new Spotify singles released by Niki on Wednesday, September 14.
Announcing the release of the new singles, Niki stated on social media saying; “Surprise!! I recorded not one but TWO spotify singles at @spotify studios. The first one is an acoustic version of “Before”, the way I originally wrote it! Easily my favorite acoustic rendition of any of my songs.
“The second is a cover of one of my all-time favorite songs, “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins. Tarzan was one of the first Disney movies I saw with my dad as a little girl. So this one is dedicated to my dad, and my two little brothers who have my whole heart🤍 Both are out everywhere now! Link in my bio & story,” she said.
The purpose of the Spotify Singles program was to provide musicians with the option to re-record one of their previously released songs in a fresh new style, in addition to covering a song of their choice originally performed by one of their own personal musical heroes.
Since 2016, Spotify Singles has served as a repository for music that users like, crafted by producers they admire, and recorded in ways that users have never heard.
Up to this point, there have been more than 630 recordings produced by more than 300 artists working in a variety of musical styles. As of this this moment, the total number of streams for Spotify Singles has surpassed 5 billion. The platform has provided musicians with a means by which they may express themselves, connect with new listeners, and engage their existing audience with new content.
Niki is currently based in the United States and signed with the record label 88rising.
After 88rising announced their collaboration with popular food festival 626 Night Market to curate a food section at their second “Head in the Clouds” music festival, Niki made a special guest appearance with a meet-and-greet at the 626 Night Market event at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on 11 August 2019.
In September 2020, Zefanya released her debut genre-bending concept album Moon child. In December 2020, Zefanya dropped “Hallway Weather”, a holiday single reminiscent of her folk/indie roots. She says the song is in “the style of music & songwriting [she remembers] feeling most like [herself]. It is genuine & it is true.”
Niki was involved on five tracks for the soundtrack of the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Niki’s sound was influenced by her favorite performers in the pop, folk, R&B, and indie music genres, such as Boyz II Men, Destiny’s Child, Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, and Whitney Houston. She had a very musical upbringing because her mother was a backup vocalist for church gospel music when she was growing up.
Niki has been exploring new sounds outside R&B since the release of her debut album Moonchild. She has also said that she listens to and is influenced by all kinds of music. She cites growing up in Indonesia as influencing her worldview, and in turn, her music.
